The Mannequin A Victorian Romance eBook Suzanne G Rogers

Yes, of course, this isn't a grand piece of literature, so I won't judge it with the same ruler as those intense pieces of work, however, as a free novel I was very impressed and found that I quite liked this novel. In fact, I could say I loved it as a simple, casual read that heavily appealed to the 19th century literature addict in me and satisfied a need for a nice little standalone novel.

Some of the best qualities this novel has lies in its historical accuracy and language. The author clearly knows enough about Victorian England to write a story that overall didn't have any blatant inaccuracies (such as mixing in something decidedly 18th century Rococo) and she was able to write the book in a way that the mannerisms of speech and word choice all sound appropriate to the time period.

Now, I will say that it felt like a few too many Victorian era literature tropes were used, but really, for such a small and simple novel I actually cried a few times. I rooted for Rosamund's happiness and I found Aubrey to be something of a tamer, milder Mr. Rochester. Their romance was simple and sweet, but satisfying. Overall, this is a book you close with a smile on your face. I liked it very well and am considering purchasing the next book within this series.

At first I was wary of this, thinking it would just be another low quality kindle romance, but overall I think this was quite a little gem of a story. I'm glad to have picked it up. I polished it off in a few short hours in a single sitting and felt content with what I'd experienced when it was all done. I recommend it as a quick, casual read for anyone who wants a Victorian romance but is interested in something "clean" and that isn't super complex or demanding like some contemporary novels of the 19th century can be.

The Mannequin A Victorian Romance eBook Suzanne G Rogers Reviews

I’m delighted to say I read this book in day. Some stories tend to have the hero and heroine go back and forth over and over for ever with the “He can’t love me because of my whatever past” Not so in this book. Well thought out story, fast paced keeping you waiting for what next and wow what next. Great characters and a plot I’ve never read before. When ever do you get a hero that so needs a heroine save him? I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.
In this historical romance set in 1883 England, Rosamund Ashfield plays Cinderella to her three cousins. Orphaned at any early age, she’s lucky not to be on the streets. Her best traits of compassion, friendship, and independence nearly do her in as events in her life take a sharp left turn, only to implode. Two men vie for her attentions, the footman turned scholar and the tormented duke. Rose faces an uncertain future with grace and aplomb that rings true.

Another delightful read from Suzanne G Rogers
I LOVED this book. The story line was fast paced and well written with excellent characters. If you like historical romances, without a lot of sex and violence, this is the book for you. I will definitely read more by this author.
This is my first time to read this author.
I don't read very many Regency-period romances, because, quite honestly, I usually find them to be filled with insipid characters and predictable storylines. This book was none of those things. I was wonderfully written and, although in keeping with Regency style, showed none of the usual emotionless whining I have found in much of this genre. This book was fresh, sweet, and full of emotion. I liked it very much and have already pre-ordered the next book in the series.
My Disclaimer

I was provided a free copy of this book by the author’s representative. I am providing an honest review in which all opinions are fully my own. I am not being compensated in any way.

My Review ✭✭✭

This is supposed to be another fairy tale re-tale. This time of Beauty and the Beast. Beauty is a young woman named Rosamund Ashfield, who has been so kindly taken in by her Aunt Lucretia’s family…and don’t you forget it, girl! The beast is by default, Aubrey Whittingham, Duke of Swanhaven, a man who has lost his parents and beloved sister and withdrawn from life to the point of ill health.

Rosamund is ever so helpful to everyone. She doesn’t see bad in anyone unless it’s forced on her. For all her efforts, she gets the short end of the stick more often than not. Her cousins use her as the butt of their jokes. Her aunt holds her in contempt and can’t seem to say anything nice about her at all. Very few people know her circumstances, and there is no one to look out for her.

Things change some for Rosamund once she befriends the Duchess, Aubrey’s grandmother. The Duchess asks Rosamund to help with her grandson. Initially, he absolutely can’t stand having her around and yells at her to go away and leave him alone. She’s been living with her cousins and Aunt Lucretia, so no sick little Duke is going to intimidate her! And she tells him so. Instead of polite conversation, they have arguments and trade insults back and forth. Their conversations are quite amusing at times as they go at it, attempting to insult each other. Invariably, of course, the worst wounding is done when it isn’t meant. Rosamund actually has some very tender feelings and Aubrey is always wounding her with his careless comments.

Eventually, they reach a sort of teasing equilibrium in their relationship. And then they are off to London, the Duchess and Rosamund, at least. But not before Aubrey says a few things that put a sparkle into Rosamund’s eyes and heat into her cheeks. But she has to face her grandfather before she sees the Duke again. And her grandfather wants nothing to do with her. He disowned her mother when she married beneath her and had her baby. He’s in no mood to be forgiving to the next generation.

Enough storytelling! What you want to know is whether the story is worth reading. Well, yes. I wouldn’t rush right out and buy it, but, yes, it is worth reading. Though it is a bit skimpy. Seems more like a play than a book to me. Aubrey and Rosamund are always walking out of the room or storming off on each other or leaving a note and disappearing. Exit stage left.

I thoroughly enjoyed the early conversations and verbal dueling between Aubrey and Rosamund. These were really well written and revealed so much about the two characters. The Duchess was rather delightful, too. She set her plan in motion and then sat back and let it work, no micromanaging. When major plan changes were called for, she didn’t hesitate to implement them. Aunt Lucretia and her two daughters were just as awful as possible and still be accepted into a drawing room. And I haven’t mentioned a thing about a mannequin. And I’m not going to. I leave that for you to discover when you read the book.

I have the second book, so I’m going to fit it into my reading time and see how the next one goes. Ms. Rogers has twelve books listed on with beautiful covers and very good ratings. Perhaps I need to read more of her work to really see her worth. Try this one, which is definitely worth reading and see if you add a new author to your list.
...I would have loved this book. However, at my current well advanced age the story which is a mash up of Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, was a bit too over the top with its saccharin sweetness.

The best thing about it is the fact that it's a quick read.
