I really enjoyed this book, and read it in one sitting, which is rare for me. Yes, it's a small book, but packed full of amusing stories of the "outhouse specialists" from the States immersing themselves in the culture of Mexico and the lives of its people. It's not the Mexico I've seen from my very limited travels or what I've read/heard from the media, but more a country of loving, humble and fun loving people that make the most of the modest possessions they have. In telling his stories, David illustrates the contrasting cultures of our two countries, and one might infer that the frenetic pace of life and the pursuit of worldly possessions north of the border don't translate to happiness as much as the love of family, hard work and a fun loving nature do south of the border. I recommend this book for anyone who is contemplating a visit to Mexico's off the beaten path gems, joining the peace corp, or just wants a quick and enjoyable read about a wonderful country that is so close to us and yet so distant in many ways.Product details

At long last David H Greegor, known to some of us as Don David, has published his book on his Peace Corps service in México. I'm reading it with great nostalgia because I was there and can attest to his truth. What a fun read. It should make lots of folks want to join Peace Corps, and i hope they do.
This book is a gem! For those of us fortunate enough to have traveled in Mexico the adventures recounted by David Greegor bring back fond memories, especially of the warmth and charm of the Mexican people. For those who plan to go, maybe for the first time, this book provides encouragement and incentive. Whatever your trip plans include, be it seeing cultural and historic sites, staying at beach resorts, enjoying great culinary opportunities or magnificent vistas, follow Greegor's advice and include visits to rural areas and small villages. Talk to the people. Ask them questions. Ask for advice. Speak as much Spanish as you possibly can. As Greegor says, the Mexican people are kind, generous, helpful and fun. You will love them, the characters described in the book, and those you meet on your own.

David H. Greegor is a spiritual fellow-traveler of early natural philosopher-explorers like von Humboldt, Banks, and Darwin. His early-career scientific adventuring--largely antipodal, conducted in the likes of Argentina, New Zealand, even Antarctica--led to a productive career as environmental professor and field biologist. I have lived in Mexico for almost six years (at two different times over 20 years). Like Dave, I found that Mexico and the Mexicans I knew there have stayed with me. This little book filled me with nostalgia for the kinds of experiences and friendships Dave had. Some of those experiences are available to anyone with an open heart and an adventurous spirit; others really require one to live among Mexicans for an extended period of time. "Going to Mexico" offers real insight into Mexico -- a country we do not know well enough -- and into the value that the Peace Corps brings to both the volunteers and the recipients of their dedicated work. Dave was paying attention, and the reader is the beneficiary of his careful, respectful eye and his willingness to laugh with others and at himself.

The Mexico David Greegor describes is the one we live every day and have fallen in love with
- the warm and friendly people, ready to help you if you ever need it
- the cows/horses/donkeys wandering freely on the cobblestone streets
- the abundant music, colors, flowers everywhere
- the fabulous foods
-and of course the i7 peso per ride "combies" (little buses) and the inexpensive larger buses that go everywhere - even to the Airport in Mexico City (for approximately US$10 each way)
We could not be happier anywhere else and particularly appreciate the open hearted friendship of the locals so readily offered.

Going to Mexico is entertaining, informative, uplifting, and funny. We can all relate to Dave Greegor’s often hilarious episodes but insightful experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mexico. I love this type of tale because I yearn to be part of the “settling in” scenario wherein the innocent outsider forsakes all to leave home and blend into an exotic landscape. There is a surfeit of Peace Corps memoirs, but none as lovingly told as this. For contrast, think Moritz Thomsen’s Living Poor and The Farm on the River of Emeralds about PCV service in Ecuador—more sober and occasionally darker. Going to Mexico combines the best of missionary-newcomer to help lift up Mexicans from a grinding lifestyle. Going to Mexico is full of love for Mexico and the Mexican people. Read it; be transformed and transported.
